Ice Climbing - Cradle Mt

Just back from Cradle where the big (250m+) waterfall  sequence from the Plateau to Ballroom Forest was frozen solid.

Never seen that before, but the temps  in the valley over night were minus 6C for several nights in a row. It is up there with the longest potential ice climb in Tassie as it is fed from the top by the Plateau Creek. Don't think it has ever been climbed, summer or winter but rumour has it that it has been abseiled ( a long held project of mine that has never quite materialised!). Suspect it might have gone by now although it is still cold up there, worth watching the forecast if you want to pick this plum......

Information on abseils

Hi there all, I have my father and brother in tassie at the moment, i was interested in taking them on a big abseil but i am not sure where to take them.
We would like to do one with a multi pitch abseil with walk in and out single day walk access around the lake st. clair area. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Stuart

Hi guys, I'm visiting in Tassie for a couple weeks and looking for a sport climbing partner/s for round Hobart. I have a rope and draws, ~2 years outdoor climbing experience and keen to get on grades 17-25. Have multi-pitch and trad experience. Weather looks good for this Thursday and Friday! Cheers, Paul

Hi all,

Read more below. More details about Tents4Peace: facebook.com/Tents4peace-Nepal.

The monsoons are now starting. Not only will this add to the hardship and suffering of the recent earthquakes, but in just a few weeks, it will make it impossible to reach and deliver aid to remote villages – including many that have yet to receive relief.

Please join us this Thursday 4 June to learn more about the situation, to hear how you can help and to connect with the Nepalese community in Hobart.

The evening will feature stories, images and cultural performances. With performance and support from Nepalese students, stunning slides from Grant Dixon and heartfelt stories of hope amidst the damage, including a live-cross to our Nepal team, this promises to be a memorable and moving evening.

This event will help fund the 500 shelters and relief supplies we need to get to earthquake damaged remote villages.

The event will feature:
* Tents4Peace founder Anna Crotty
* Aarati Khanal, Nepalese PhD student
* Nepalese cultural performance
* Dr Edi Albert, Associate Professor, Remote and Polar Medicine
* Photos by Tasmanian photographer Grant Dixon
* Dr Tom Baxter as MC

Funds raised will support Tents4peace Nepal and the Nepali based Himalayan Social Foundation-HSF.

Nepalese food available thanks to Kathmandu Cuisine.

The event is being hosted by the University of Tasmania School of Business and Economics.

So please book, share and spread the word.

Hey there folks, I'm looking for a couple of tickets to the Banff Mountain Film Festival tomorrow......can anyone help me out?

If you have some spare tickets, or know someone who does, feel free to give me a call! 0450329352

Cheers,

Zach

See article below with an update to the update which became outdated because of more new routes last weekend. Plus James Scarborough and crew has begun a bouldering frenzy on the boulders in the forest below the cliff.

Here is a guide to 14 new routes done at Bare Rock since the Climb Tassie guide came out in 2013. It has some nice photos by Simon Carter.

Retrobolt Free Passage?

Should I add a bolt to Free Passage (22) in Cataract Gorge? I seem to recall in the 80's that there was a pretty good piece of gear on the bottom face of Free Passage at Offal buttress. BUt it looks like some rock has fallen out of the route in recent years and the gear is now very marginal or total rubbish. I don't think a trad route should ever be retrobolted, but in this case I'm tempted, seeing the original climb has been altered through broken rock (which might mean that the original gear was shit anyway). The first 5m is essentially a solo now; I've led it years ago but I'm not game to lead it now - what would people think of a bolt? Has anyone led it recently and found decent gear?

CCT Golden Anniversary Bash

CCT Anniversary BBQ

The founding members of the CCT, those that are still around, are having a BBQ to celebrate the founding of the Club 50 years ago (and Max Cutliff’s birthday – he turns 83 I think!).

When: This Saturday, 25th April at 2.00pm onwards

Where: Attila Vrana’s block, 781 Summerleas Rd, Fern Tree

What to bring: Whatever you want to eat and drink – BYO everything essentially

Who: Any CCT members or others you want to invite – partners welcome - or any climbers past or present from around the state.

They may be a bit wrinkled round the edges  now but many of these “older” lads went on to climb significant mountains and routes  on Denali (Mt McKinley), in Europe and the Alps, NZ, S America, Antarctica  and of course the Himalayas. Worth talking to!

Hope to see you there.

Gerry on Farewell Companions 21 at Appetite Hill

Bob McMahon on 1st asent of Amundsen 18 at Appetite Hill

9 NEW CLIMBS in the last 2 weeks on school holidays. Township Creek area is proving to be a little gold mine of new routes. Bob McMahon and I did the obvious cracks in 1984, but since September we've done 31 new routes. New ones include sport routes graded 21, 23, 24, 24, 25, 25, and trad graded 16, 18, 19. My 16 yr old daughter led the trad routes and we are going back soon to knock off another 4 that we found. Plus Ingvar and I bolted 3 more projects at Appetite Hill - mine... is about 25 and both his are 28; Appetite Hill is another major cliff in the Township Creek area that Bob and I did 6 trad routes on n 1984, now there is lots of arêtes and faces to keep us busy for a year or two. Here are some photos from 1984 - Bob McMahon leading the first ascent of Amundsen (18) and me bridging up the mighty corner of Farewell Companions (21), both at Appetite Hill. I repeated Amundsen the other day - a perfect splitter about red camalot size - 3 star on any cliff in Australia, but being at Appetite Hill, it wouldn't surprise me if I did the 2nd ascent, some 31 years later.

I noticed a a couple of nice looking buttresses out on Cape Huoy, RHS heading out to the end. Thought I had myself a swag of newies, especially a beautiful pock-marked arete, only to discover a nice line of rings already in situ. Wondering if there is any info about them out there anyone?  BenM

Tomorrow's Dream at Bare Rock, Fingal has a new 2nd pitch, a fully bolted grade 23. The whole 3 pitch route can now be done as a sport route, with pitches of 16, 23 and 19. The new 2nd pitch moves right 5m from the belay along the old route of Conan Macmorna,(no trad gear required) then blasts straight up the wall with some excellent technical face climbing. The original 2nd pitch at grade 18 is still an option, requiring several medium size cams. FA: Gerry Narkowicz. 12/4/15
