howdy,
I'm heading to down to Tas over chrissy / new years for a spot of climbing, mainly focussing on Freycinet, and was wondering if it was possible to get some beta for the sea level traverse. I've got the 6th edition of craglets and while it gives a general overview of the thing, it's not all that specific. So, if anyone's done it
-How long did it take? (guide says 8 hours, is this reasonable?)
-How many roped pitches are there?
-What sort of rack did you take?
-How well protected is it?
-How hard is it to find / stay on route?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
cheers

  1. Cam,
The descriptions for the sea level traverse are generally kept pretty vague, so as to keep the adventure factor. The whole point is to follow your nose.

I've only wandered along as far as flowstone (where you have to start climbing or swimming), but I can say:

    • the full version will take all day
    • at flowstone you either have to swim or climb Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, 16 (I think - from memory )
    • its easy enough to stay on route. You find your way as you go along. As I said that's part of the adventure. Besides the bit at flowstone you never get very far away from the water.
    • protection is optional but lots of water is mandatory

Its a bloody fun way to spend the day.

    Cheers,

    Jon

  2. Thanks Jon,
Much appreciated, sounds like fun. I have some other questions about climbing at Freycinet, but I'll post them under another topic.
    cheers
