I'm pleased to announce that the thesarvo iPhone app is now in the app store.

Version 1.0 gives offline access in a mobile optimised interface to all of the Tasmanian route and boulder guides on thesarvo - over 3000 routes and 1500 problems.

It's priced at a reasonable $3.99 - proceeds go to the running of this site.

Installing it

To install it search for "thesarvo" on the iPhone app store, or go here:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/thesarvo/id379419619?mt=8

You need to be on Wi-Fi to install it as the app is about 60mb with all the topos included.

It should also work on an iPod Touch (although I havent tested it).

Bugs and Feature Requests

Version 1.0 is pretty basic, and there are a lot more features that could be added over time - I'm interested to hear what you think would be useful in the next version. Probably the biggest ones on my list are:

  • GPS/maps integration
  • Favourites and comments
  • Automatic updates - at the moment updates will be through the app store
  • Remember which climb you are looking at when the app is closed

Also please post any bugs or issues you find here and I will try and fix them in the next version.

Another thing to add to the road map: An Android version. Does anyone out there use Android phones?

    1. The shiny new communication device in my pocket would like a thesarvo Android app for Christmas.....or before if possible! Thanks John!

        Talk to deano
He had a version running on android but needs a phone to test it on

        1. Deano has my Windows/Andriod Phone to test

Last i heard it was working on an emulator but not on actual Andriod.

          Something about touch events.

Version 1.1 is now in the app store. Updates include:

    • Map integration for GPS coordinates
    • Native ipad support
    • Reworked top navigation bar
    • Landscape mode support

  3. Had a play with your app on Claire's Iphone the other day, nice work, it ran smoothly and quickly. As far as a wishlist of update goes, for those of us with dodgy eyes it would be nice if you could zoom and pan around images.

  4. An Android version would be great.

  5. H Jon-

Nice work on the iPhone app.  I did a map centric climbing app for Arizona called "Rock N Road Arizona" for the iPhone.

I didn't see how to access nearby climbing areas using the GPS-you mentioned that as a feature-how does it work?

    cheers

Hi john, you get to the maps from any of the guides that have GPS co-ordinates - there is a button next to the table of co-ordinates. So its not quite the same as crags near you.
Maybe an option at the top level which shows a map including all co-ordinates would be useful.

      1. I'll check it out.

Here's a link to my app: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rock-n-road-arizona/id365218458?mt=8    I designed it so the App opens to the map, you can see your location, and the pins of all the areas, handy if you want to see what's close by.  Then tapping on the "pins" gives details of each area.

If you'd like to do an overall map interface, let me know and I'll see if I can dig up my source code for the Arizona app.  I have a lot of experience with online mapping (that's my main business, for real estate clients, though--not as fun as climbers).

        cheers

ps.  I'm also working on Android apps too, just went to the Google conference in May. If you'd like to do one for Android, perhaps we can collaborate.

Version 1.2, which fixes a bug where the app crashes on iOS 4.2.1, and also has a content update, is in the app store now. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/thesarvo/id379419619

  7. Just travelling around Tassie and this app got recommended to us.

We tried to download it a couple of days ago and it wouldn't work now it is completely unavailable.

Is it being updated or has it been taken down.

    1. Jon Nermut AUTHOR

      1. Sure is working again, downloaded it just then. Nice one Nerm, it's rad!!

  8. Jon,

The app seems to be broken under iOS5? Or at least it is on my phone. Have tried reinstalling it, but to no avail.

The splash screen loads, but then there's just a black screen with no content.

    cheers

    1. Exactly what my app is doing as well. might be time for a new update?

    2. Jon Nermut AUTHOR

Hmm thanks for letting me know. Unfortunately for various reasons I wont be able to have this fixed for a couple of weeks.

I've just submitted an update to the App Store that fixes the iOS 5 issue. Should be available in a couple of days once Apple approves it.

Unfortunately the maps are busted now - will fix soon and make them better

  10. Biggest thing I'd like to see in the app would be a search feature, takes ages to find a climbs without it.

    1. Jon Nermut AUTHOR

Just a global search on the name? Or more sophisticated?

      1. Like the Araps App would be good

        1. Climb by Grade

        2. Climb by Name

        3. Global Search.

        1. Jon Nermut AUTHOR

          The update is available now.

I'm having a play on implementing a search function - might get it done over the xmas break.

          1. New update is good, much quicker with the text menu's

Steve and I where talking about another idea yesterday... Feature to be able to tick a climb once you've done it so that when you do a search you can search for all climbs or climbs you haven't done yet.

            1. beans, BEANS! i NEED to know how many beans i have!!!!!! also have a direct link to 8a.nu so not a second is wasted before everyone else finds out?

              (wink)

i think a "notes' section would be good. given that so many routes in tassie don't get climbed much and can change or be different to any given description. being able to do that at the crag then write it up later would be cool.....

also if you need 4 x #3 cams but only singles of everything else(etc) you can keep track of that stuff.

              1. Jon Nermut AUTHOR

Rough plan is to be able to have comments on individual climbs kind of like you can comment on a page at the moment. And some way to record an opinion on grade and stars

                Tick lists? Um nah.

Version 1.5 is in the appstore. New stuff:

    - Updated content
    - New interactive topos
    - Search for crags and climbs (as per Jed's request. Not quite as sophisticated as he wanted)
    - Map at top level shows all crags with a GPS point (original idea by John Middendorf)
    - Added weather links

  12. Nice one Jon, looks good!

  13. Did Deano get an Android friendly version working?

    1. Jon Nermut AUTHOR

Not beyond a proof of concept. Maybe I'll do it next holidays.

      1. Yeah I think only working on the emulator (don't have an Android phone). Looks like the new version is built a different way anyway? So would have to be made differently.

p.s. new version is great, Jon!!

        1. Jon Nermut AUTHOR

Its still a web view for the pages, just more native stuff around them - eg menu, map & search

I do have access to android hardware these days,  maybe I will give it a go some time

  14. Nice! Good to see the new topos in the app (smile)

Re ticking, would you consider just integrating with ticks on thecrag.com instead of re-inventing the wheel?

    1. Jon Nermut AUTHOR

I'm unlikely to implement a tick list in the thesarvo web site or app. I would integrate the app with thecrag.com if it didnt take me much effort, eg a couple of hours. Or if somebody else did it. Sounds unlikely.

  15. Jon Nermut AUTHOR

Would anybody care if the new version of the thesarvo app was iOS 8 only? Saves me work supporting old versions

  16. Seems perfectly sensible to me ...
