Anyone else climbed this recently? I was just reviewing the description after climbing it on Sunday with Tony and it seems to me that the length in the guide (68 metres) is significantly exaggerated. All I know is that we rapped to to the ground from the anchors on 60 metre ropes and had about 10 metres rope spare. The second pitch is described as 30 metres; I'd say it's more like 20. Comments?

  1. Your talking about half the routes in tassie. Vertical Life wrote an article pointing this out.

The Huge (or actually, smallish) Tasmanian Conspiracy http://www.verticallifemag.com.au/2013/02/the-huge-or-actually-smallish-tasmanian-conspiracy/

Janzoon should be written up as 1 pitch starting from the ledge up and left from where the track goes to and it's around 50m, then 55m rap back down to track.

  2. I am sure the editors are doing their best. No need to criticise, just tell them. With the increasing number of belay and rap bolts, pitch lengths will change. Blue Meridian is another example where the climb is 5m shorter. Also, in the old days pitch lengths were measured a different way allowing a few metres to set up a belay.

Not sure about Janzoon in one pitch, one would have to be careful to avoid rope drag as one goes up and L at the start to gain the crack. Also Janzoon Ledge is a good spot to hang around and take in the view.

As for the Vertical Life article, what a complete load of demented, nit picking rubbish. Or a poor stir.

Whoops! It looks like I had a senior moment with this thread. After rapping off the Suicide Sadness/Janzoon anchors today I'll make a correction. We only had somewhere between 3 and 5 metres of rope left over, so the rap must actually about 56 metres. Sorry about that ...
