Due to the obvious dissatisfaction of many climbers (both readers and contributors) with ROCK magazine, an idea of a community EZINE has been raised. It would be aimed at the whole climbing community, with content that all climbers find interesting and can relate to.

Rock seems to have become stale and repetitive, to prevent this happening to a new EZINE it has been suggested that each issue have a different editor(s) so that content is more varied. Also this would help keep the EZINE idea alive as it would prevent the "burn out" that surely must be associated with editing issue after issue. (maybe this is part of the problem at rock.)

Various formats and models exist for such a EZINE. please put your two cents in.

Remember to be a good read for all it would need contributions from all standards of climbers, from all around Australia. Bumbly to Gun climbers.

Would you help?

  1. Sounds like a lot of work. How big would an issue be? What time period?
Does an ezine with electronic "issues" provide any extra value than the existing sites that are out there, where articles can be posted, if anybody would get off their arse and write them?

All good points Jon and valid questions, the idea came up in a few forums around teh place and people who have tried to submit stuff to rock over the years.....we are exploring the possibility...I dont think content wil be a problem as there is plenty off stuff knocked back by rock as they dont meet there "criteria" which according to a lot of people is way to rigid.

The idea would be to put out the ezine around every two months, totally free in a PDf downloadable format. All contruibutors would retain copyright of there own work (unlike rock) and if we can generate advertsing the funds be used to pay for hosting, contributor and any left over to various non-profit climbing organisation around Australia.

It might not work, it might work but we just need feedback to see who is keen to send stuff in (or help on a monthly basis). There are a lot of people shut out by rock guidelines, for example they wont take digital photos, that this publication could help kick start there careers.

  3. Hmmm, it sounds feasible. I'm willing to create a sandbox space on this server if you need one, for uploading pictures and documents etc through a web interface. I think at the moment there is plenty of spare bandwidth and space.
However I can't commit any time, way too busy as it is.
