South Wellington Bouldering
20min to 45min
Mixed sun and shade
Dolerite
Introduction
Mt Wellington offers some good opportunities for bouldering. Its a bit scattered, and dolerite is an acquired taste for bouldering. But there are lots of problems, particularly moderates with easy access for after work climbing.
Access
From the centre of Hobart drive up Davey Street, which becomes Huon Road, for 9.6km. Just before Fern Tree a well sign posted road (Pillinger Drive) leads off sharply to the right and winds up the mountain. Keep going up the road to reach the Summit. From the Summit carpark take follow the track past the transmission tower to the South Wellington track. All the boulders are accessed from this track.
Plenty of parking at the summit.
GPS
South Wellington
South Wellington comprises areas accessed from the South Wellington walking track. The area is stunning when sunny and in the middle of a snow storm!
From the car park walk about 30m along the track to South Wellington, and directly opposite the TV tower you will see a small face with 'ABC 1958' graffitied on it. Sit start on good flat hold and up on slopers.
Patient Lady Boulders
These boulders are about a 20 minute easy walk from the Summit car park. Head South along the main path past the concrete tower until the South Wellington track veers right, keeping on the edge of the plateau. The boulders are fairly easy to spot as they are the first large, decent looking group of boulders you will come across. The landings are good and rock quality is also good with some interesting features.

decent warm up
Well worth a look at, quite friction dependent. Sit start would make it harder.
Eli
Chimney :)
Eli
Start with hands in horizontal crack. Probably the best V3 on the mountain (so far).
Eli
be careful about the flake up the top. A hard start but a good landing.
Eli
Good landing and a good climb.

The left crack line.
R Stallard
Sit way back at the bottom of the cave and layback/ jam your way to glory. A fallen over pillar at half height makes this one of the safer lines on the mountain. Absolute banger!
R Stallard
Penal Colony
An area with high and good problems. But the landings are worse than second hill. Lots of potential for new boulders though!
Access to the Penal Colony is via the small valley on the other side of the second hill. Alternatively, head up to the Second Hill boulders, and go east and south around the front side.

Climb the perfect #2 handcrack. Start in the hole and watch your back on the slab.
T Krauss 2013
Slap up the easy-angled arete to the right of Plumber's Crack

There are lots of boulders out here waiting for the psyched individuals. Walk down the Summit-Ice House track past the Second Hill. Keep going and you'll see a artefact of a sign showing the way to the rocking stone.
Snowdonia
At the sign for the rocking stone head right to get to a long band of cliffs. There is a heap of potential here for boulders of all heights and difficulties.

Surmount the pepper berry, where you can bivouac by the springs at camp 4. Start up the crack, but you might want to ditch your oxygen tanks before mantling the Hillary step. Take a quick summit selfie, but don't dawdle in the dead zone.
